On March 26, 2025, at 2:30 p.m., Newton Police responded to 708 W 11th St S to assist the Jasper County Sheriff’s Office in serving a court committal order for 26-year-old Jacob Corey Showalter. Upon entering the home, officers learned Showalter had threatened others, armed himself with a knife, and barricaded himself in an upstairs bedroom where firearms were accessible. He also made threats of self-harm and “suicide by cop.”
Crisis negotiators and mental health professionals attempted for hours to communicate with Showalter, but he refused to cooperate. Tactical teams deployed non-lethal gas into the residence, and shortly after, Showalter surrendered at 11:17 p.m. without further incident.
Showalter was taken into custody and transported to the Jasper County Jail. He faces charges of Harassment 1st Degree (Aggravated Misdemeanor) and Interference with Official Acts While Displaying a Dangerous Weapon (Class D Felony).
The Newton Police Department was assisted by its Tactical Team and K9 Unit, the Jasper County Sheriff’s Office, the Central Iowa Regional Tactical Team, the Newton Fire Department, and Jasper County Emergency Management.
