Meeting in a special session Friday afternoon, the Marion County Board of Supervisors discussed the future of the 216th Place Des Moines River Bridge off of County Highway T-17.
The bridge, which is also referred to as the Old Dollar bridge, suffered a partial collapse on Wednesday evening. Marion County Engineer Tyler Christian spoke with the board about the covenant in place with the State Historic Preservation Office for the historic bridge and the next steps to determine what the future of the bridge will be. Christian told the board that the area is closed to the public and advised that people stay away from the area. When asked for his recommendation, Christian advised that the county pursue removal of the bridge in its entirety.
The board of supervisors concluded the meeting by approving a motion to give Christian the directive to develop a project and seek out bids for full demolition of the bridge.
