The Newton Police Department has reported a recent increase in vehicle thefts and break-ins involving Kia model vehicles. The Department says this criminal activity occurs by exploiting a vulnerability in the Kia ignition system. Thieves reportedly bypass factory-installed security features and can steal the vehicles quickly. Newton Police say other communities in central Iowa are also experiencing an increase in Kia thefts, and surveillance footage from several theft locations is being reviewed to identify suspects. Anyone with information is encouraged to contact the Newton Police Department.

To help deter a break-in or theft, the Newton Police encourages Kia owners to park in well-lit, high-traffic areas and keep doors and windows locked. It’s also suggested that steering wheel locks and other anti-theft devices be considered, along with installation of a GPS tracking device in case the vehicle is stolen.
