Pella Christian Boys and Girls Tennis Cruise to Sweeps in Season Openers over Centerville

The Pella Christian boys and girls tennis teams began the spring season on the right note Monday evening, as the boys earned a 7-0 sweep over the Big Reds on the road, while the girls cruised to a 10-0 sweep on Eagle Lane.

Competing against a Centerville squad that only had five players, the Eagle boys lost just one game in the seven matches to earn the sweep. In singles play, Aaron Meinders at #1, Rob Schreur at #2, Rhett Terpstra at #4, and Evan Tschetter at #5 were all victorious 6-0, while Kirby Van Wyngarden won 6-1 at #3. In the two doubles matches, Schreur and Terpstra were victorious 6-0 at #1 and Meinders and Van Wyngarden teamed up for a 6-0 win at #2.

Back on Eagle Lane, the Pella Christian girls were almost equally as dominant against Centerville. In singles play, Reagan DeVries at #1, Ava Breems at #2, Renae Van Wyk at #5, and Kate Braafhart at #6 were all victorious 6-0, 6-0, while Addie Van Arendonk won 6-3, 6-0 at #3 and Lexi Branderhorst won 6-4, 6-0 at #4. In the four doubles matches, DeVries and Breems won 6-0, 6-1 at #1, Van Arendonk and Branderhorst won 6-4, 6-2 at #2, and Van Wyk and Braafhart won 6-1, 6-2 at #3. Competing in their first career varsity tennis match at #4 doubles, the freshmen duo of Trinley Gibson and Nora Van Arendonk picked up a 6-0, 6-0 sweep. While only ten of the matches played on the night counted towards the official score due to Centerville only having nine players, the Eagles played an 11th match with Ali Pleima and Elsa Breems at #5 doubles playing the Big Reds #4 doubles team at the end of their first match, and they earned a 6-0 win in the lone set played.

Both Pella Christian tennis teams open the season with a 1-0 overall record, and both squads will return to the court next Monday to square off with Grinnell at 4:15 pm.

Pella Christian Track and Field and Girls Soccer Teams Scheduled to be in Action Today

The Pella Christian track and field teams begin the outdoor portion of their seasons today, while the Eagles’ girls soccer squad travels southeast for their first match of the spring tonight.

Just over two weeks after competing in their lone indoor event of the year, the Pella Christian boys track and field team will host the eight-team Pella Christian Boys Early Season Meet, while the girls will travel to Bloomfield for the eight-team DC Relays at Davis County. The Eagle girls are coming off of a second place at the IATC Indoor Championships in Ames earlier this month, while the boys finished 31st in the same meet.

Meanwhile, the Pella Christian girls soccer team will kick-off the inaugural season for head coach Matt Dowie tonight at Ottumwa. Tonight’s meeting between Eagles and Bulldogs is the seventh dating back to 2017 and marks the fourth straight season the two squads have opened the spring against one another. Pella Christian has dominated the series in the previous matchups, winning all six contests by a combined score of 29-5, including a 2-1 overtime win in last year’s meeting.

The Pella Christian track and field meets tonight are scheduled to start at 4:30 pm, with the Eagles soccer game at Ottumwa slated to begin an hour later at 5:30 pm.
