Major Road Closures that will affect drivers in Marion County are starting.

Starting on Monday, the Highway 14 Mile Long Bridge will begin a lengthy closure. This will be part of an overlay project of the bridge and replacement of the smaller bridge north of the Mile Long Bridge. According to the Sheriff’s Office, the highway will be closed between Highway G40 and Highway G28 starting at 8:00 am on Monday. The project is projected for a 200 calendar day completion.

Sheriff Jason Sandholdt advised that a deputy will be assigned to the north side of Lake Red Rock to provide better response times to calls in the area in preparation for potential situations. During this time, Highway 14 will be closed to all traffic and a detour will be in place using Iowa 163, County Highway T17 and Highway 92 in both directions.

Another major closure will be Iowa Highway 5 north of Marion County Road G-76 that will be closed beginning on Tuesday, April 15th. Beginning at 8 am that day, weather permitting, crews will close Iowa 5 to remove and replace the bridge over Walnut Creek, 0.9 miles north of G-76 in Marion County, and the closure is anticipated to last until mid-September. Those traveling on Iowa 5 while it is closed will need to follow a marked detour route around the work zone using Iowa 92 and Marion County T-17.

The Iowa DOT reminds motorists to drive with caution, obey the posted speed limit and other signs in the work area, and be aware that traffic fines for moving violations are at least double in work zones. Additionally, drivers should stay alert and allow ample space between vehicles, and wear seat belts.

Stay tuned to KNIA/KRLS for updates on these projects.
