Pella Christian athletic director Dan Branderhorst announced Friday that Jon Mumm has been hired as the new head coach of the girls basketball program.
Jon comes to Eagle Lane with 20 years of coaching experience at the youth, junior high, high school levels. A native of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, Mumm graduated from Sioux Falls Christian High School in 1997, where he was a first-team all-conference selection as a senior and helped lead his squad to a 3rd place finish at the South Dakota Boys’ State Basketball Tournament. Jon also played collegiate basketball for four years at Trinity Bible College in Ellendale, North Dakota, where he graduated with a degree in elementary education. As a member of the Trinity Lions’ men’s basketball team, Mumm scored the fifth most points in a school history with 2,101, and posted the best career three-point (43%) and free throw (80.6%) percentages. Jon was also a two time National Christian College Athletic Association All-American (2nd Team in 1999 and 1st Team in 2002). Mumm said that he is looking forward to leading the Eagles girls basketball squad and adding to the success of the program.
“I am incredibly excited and incredibly grateful for this opportunity. I know that the Pella Christian girls program has a long, storied tradition, and I’m super excited to be a part of it.”
Jon added that he’s excited to take on the challenge of the Little Hawkeye Conference and that his main goal for the girls this upcoming season will be to see their game develop every day.
“We are going to really focus on steady improvement. That’s going to be our main focus to work really hard, improve every day, and realize that the conference is extremely tough, but we are going to take hold of that, embrace it, and we’re going to be battle tested come playoff time. That’s going to be our mindset that we’re going to be battle tested, and we want to be in a position to have the opportunity to make the state tournament every year.”
Mumm takes over the girls’ program from Brendan Foughty, who was announced the new Pella Christian boys basketball coach last month after leading the Eagle girls to a 18-28 record the past two seasons.
