Boys Track Wins Panther Relays; Girls 2nd Place

Knoxville track and tennis were in action on Thursday as the Panthers had success on Randy Wilson Track. The boys finished 1st at their own meet by a comfortable margin of 189 to PCM’s 143. The Panthers had seven 1st place finishes including Issac Rankin in the 3200 and 1600, Koby Higginbotham in the 110 high hurdles, Cael Irving in the 800, Kaiden Smith in the high jump and the 4×400 and 4×800 meter relays teams. Higginbotham, who recently set a Blue Standard for the Drake Relays in the 110 high hurdles, set a new meet record in that event on Thursday with a time of :14.05 and told KNIA/KRLS Sports it felt good to establish a new low time in his home relays.

Higginbotham: “It feels great to know that I’ve left my mark on Knoxville Track for a few years, I hope it stands for a little while.”

The girls placed 2nd and had several 2nd place finishes highlighted by Avery Pelong finishing runner up in both the shot put and discus events. Pelong tells KNIA/KRLS Sports after watching Ciara Heffron have her record setting career, she was able to be inspired to strive for high marks.

Pelong: “It’s been really nice. Last year in practice she would correct me and I just hope to one day be at her level. I really enjoyed it.”

Knoxville Girls Wins Over Clarke 9-0, Boys Fall To The Indians 9-0

Tennis was also on the Panther menu Thursday and both Knoxville Squads came away with opposing 9-0 results. The girls are still unbeaten on the season after a 9-0 sweep over Clarke. Janie Maasdam, Iselynn Prevo, Marlea Cox, Bridgette Liston, Addy Dunkin and Jordyn Counts helped Knoxville sweep the singles rounds. The boys lost 9-0. Coach Kevin Wadle told KNIA/KRLS Sports it was a very tough night for his team. The girls will travel to Pella Christian on Monday while the boys will travel to Chariton on Tuesday.
