Four Norwalk spring sports teams competed on Thursday night in the Warriors’ final competitions of the week.

Boys Track 5th at Waukee

The Norwalk boys track and field team placed fifth (unofficially) out of 16 teams in the Class A division of the Waukee Invite. The night was highlighted by two school records and two Blue Standard automatic qualifying times for the Drake Relays.

The 4×400 relay quartet of Kaiden Kunze, Xavier Bush, Cam Thomas and Daniel Roche placed first with a school-record time of 3:22.16, which was also a Blue Standard. The Warriors also set a school record in the 4×200 relay as Roche, Kadan Borcherding-Johnson, Eli Robbins and Kunze placed second in 1:29.76. Senior Tony Anania had a big night as well, winning the 3,200-meter run in 9:39.42 and placing second in the 800 with a Blue Standard of 1:54.36. Kunze and Logan Atherton both cleared 6 feet, 2 inches in the high jump, placing first and third, respectively.

Norwalk will be represented well at next week’s Drake Relays in Des Moines. The official qualifying list will be released on Friday.

Girls Track 8th at Indianola

The Norwalk girls track and field team ran four season-best relay times and tied for eighth place in Indianola’s Ron Werling Relays. The Warriors placed fourth in four events, including freshman Olive DeRocher’s time of 2:35.1 in the 800. The 4×100 team of Dani Peters, Kinzie Giesemann, Ella Johnson and Nyah Hulbert clocked a season-best time of 51.22, as did the 4×200 team of Peters, Giesemann, Ava Norem and Hulbert in 1:51.79. The Warrior girls also placed fourth in the shuttle hurdle relay and took fifth in the sprint medley.

Girls Tennis falls 6-5

The Norwalk girls tennis team lost a tough 6-5 dual decision at Ballard, falling to 2-3 on the season. Thursday marked the second consecutive 6-5 defeat for the Warriors, who came up short in three third-set tiebreakers in doubles play. Norwalk earned victories at No. 2, No. 3 and No. 4 singles behind Ivanna Sherstiuk, Leah Black and Logan Geisler. Sherstiuk and Geisler teamed up for a win at No. 1 doubles and Anna Curran and Brooke McKinney won at No. 5 doubles. All five Warrior wins came in straight sets.

Girls Soccer finishes in scoreless tie

For the third time in seven matches this season, the Norwalk girls soccer team finished in a tie. The Class 2A fifth-ranked Warriors tied Southeast Polk 0-0 following 80 minutes of play at Mineart Field. They came up empty on seven shots while goalie Katie Liedtke made three saves. Norwalk is now 3-1-3 overall.
