Pella Christian Soccer Teams Fall to Des Moines Christian

Two second half goals doomed the Pella Christian boys soccer team in a 2-0 loss at home against Des Moines Christian Thursday night, while the Eagle girls fell 7-0 on the road against the Class 1A #4 Lions.

On Eagle Lane, the Pella Christian and Des Moines Christian boys played a scoreless match for much of the night. Neither squad found the back of the net in the first half, and the scoreless tie remained in place through the first 30 minutes of the second half. The Lions put an end to the tie with just under 10 minutes remaining in the contest, netting a deep goal to go ahead 1-0 in the 70th minute, before adding the game’s final goal in the 74th minute. Pella Christian’s record fell to 4-3 overall on the season with the loss.

In Urbandale, the Des Moines Christian girls jumped out to a 5-0 lead at halftime, before adding two second half goals to secure the 7-0 victory. Eagles head coach Matt Dowie said that he saw improvement in his squad from Tuesday’s loss to Dallas Center-Grimes, and they were more organized for longer stretches in the game. Dowie added that goalkeeper Julianne Van Gorp made some big saves in the net to help give Pella Christian chances during the game.

The Pella Christian boys soccer team returns to the pitch on Saturday to compete in the West Central Valley Tournament at 10 am, while the girls soccer squad is off until hosting Oskaloosa on Tuesday.
