The Newton girls soccer team won their own Invitational at H.A. Lynn Stadium Saturday, behind seven goals from freshman Sophia Coady. Coady scored the Cardinals only goal in their first game against Colfax-Mingo, which ended in a 1-1 tie. Her kick went past the Tigerhawks goalie with 8:33 left in the first 30-minute half. Colfax-Mingo got the tying score on a penalty kick with 2:35 left in the game.
In Newton’s second match, Coady tied a school record for goals in a game with six, as the Cardinals rolled to a 9-0 win over Benton. Coady’s goals came with 27:51, 15:45 and 1:43 left in the first half, and 25:24, 21:07, and 15:08 left in the second half. Her last score was on a corner kick. Ryanne Rausch from the 2016-2017 season now shares the goals per game record with Coady. Newton’s other scores in the Benton game came from Aliviah Ross, Payton Carkhuff, and Merissa Schiebel.
Colfax-Mingo defeated Benton 7-1 in the second game of the invitational, placing second to the Cardinals due to goal differential.
The Newton girls soccer team is now 5-4 this season, with their next game at home Monday against Des Moines North.
