A grieving Simpson College community moved forward Saturday after the death of President Jay Byers last week, as seniors were getting ready for graduation and a busy spring sports schedule, with little time for rescheduling to take place. Simpson Athletic Director Marty Bell tells KNIA News it was a week no one ever wants to have to go through, and it was difficult to process the shocking news of the passing of such a beloved person of the Simpson College community. Bell also said the Simpson community came together in the time of need.

“We talk all the time about community, and the greatest thing about Simpson are the people. But it’s those times where you really see that. You’re talking about a community that rallied and came together quickly, and is continuing to do that as we get through the process of grieving and understanding. Honestly, it’s a privilege to be a part of this community. Jay meant alot to so many people, his heart and soul was about Simpson College. He will be sorely missed, but by the same token we are here for our students and we have to continue to do the work of the college. We have to continue to forge ahead, because quite frankly that is what he would want.”

All Simpson activities included a moment of silence for President Byers before competition began. Simpson College Board of Trustees Chair Terry Handley said at a press conference last week more information about interim leadership at Simpson and the eventual search for a new president will be announced when those decisions have been made. A celebration of life service for President Byers will be held this Friday at 10:30am at Hoyt Sherman Place in Des Moines. Find more information below.
