Four Newton boys spring sports teams were in action Tuesday, with the soccer and tennis teams competing at home and the golf and track and field teams in Pella and Ottumwa respectively.

Newton Boys Track And Field Top Five Other Teams to Win Don Newell Classic In Ottumwa

The Newton boys track and field team won their third meet of the month Tuesday night, finishing first at the Don Newell Classic in Ottumwa with 154 points. 

The Cardinals collected nine first place finishes, and ten more top tens. Individual event winners included Caden Klein in the 100 meter dash (11.00), Ali Yahia in the 200 meter dash (23.41), Lance Zaabel in the 3200 meter run (10:31.18), Reilly Trease in the 110 meter hurdles (15.14), Nick Milburn in the shot put (56’-10”), Isaiah Hansen in the high jump (6”-00”), and Zach Felten in the discus (139”-10”). Newton’s 4×400 relay team (3:39.09) and shuttle hurdle relay team (1:02.25) also crossed the finish line first. Zaabel was second in the 1600 meter run (4:58.75), and Cade Bauer was second in the high jump (5’-10”). Bauer was also third in the 400 meter hurdles (59.24), while the Cardinals’ 4×800 meter relay team also took third (8:45.75). 

Find complete results here. The Newton track and field teams will host the Cardinal Invitational on Thursday, while those that qualified for the Drake Relays will compete in Des Moines Thursday through Saturday.

Newton Boys Soccer Downs Ballard at H.A. Lynn Stadium 2-1

The Cardinals boys soccer team used back to back first half goals to beat Ballard 2-1 Tuesday night. The Bombers scored the game’s first goal in the 12th minute, before Newton responded in the 20th minute with a Landon Bozarth penalty kick goal to knot the game back up at 1-1. Aiden Robson broke the tie in the 37th minute, finding the back of the net to push the Cardinals ahead 2-1, and Newton held on the rest of the way. The victory marked the first time this spring that the Cardinals won back to back games, improving them to 3-4-2 overall. 

The Newton boys soccer team returns to the pitch on Thursday at Southeast Polk.

Newton Boys Tennis Team Falls At Home To Boone

The Cardinals boys tennis team lost to Boone 8-3 at Newton’s Aurora Heights Park on Tuesday. Newton won two singles matches and one doubles match. Ethan Valtman and Ethan Freese both won in two sets in singles play, while the doubles team of Valtman and Evan Marshall took their doubles match in three sets. The Cardinals boys tennis team fell to 2-4 overall on the season, and are slated to return to the court on Thursday at Pella. 

Newton Boys Golf Finish Fifth At Second Round LHC Meet In Pella

The Newton boys golf team finished 5th at round two of the Little Hawkeye Conference regular season meets Tuesday at Bos Landen Golf Course in Pella. The Cardinals shot a 352 on the day, while Pella placed first with a 310. Jackson Price was Newton’s top golfer at the meet, tying for seventh place with a seven-over par 79. Peyton Rozendaal finished 16th with an 85, while Lincoln Peterson and Mason Smith wrapped up the Cardinals’ team scoring with a 91 and 97 respectively. Rounding out Newton’s varsity lineup at the meet was Grant Osby with a 98 and Carter Forst with a 103. Newton remains fourth in the regular season conference standings, but moved just two strokes back of Oskaloosa going into the final regular season conference meet next Tuesday. 

The Newton boys golf team will play again today at 11 a.m. in the Williamsburg Boys Golf Invitational.
