
The Newton girls soccer team shut down Williamsburg at Williamsburg Friday, while four Newton girls tennis players competed in an invitational at Knoxville.
Newton Girls Soccer Gets Six Goals and Their Sixth Win At Williamsburg
The Newton girls soccer team picked up their sixth win of the season Friday by scoring six goals and shutting out Williamsburg. The Cardinal girls have not allowed a goal in their last three games, and have only been scored on twice in their last six outings. Sophia Coady and Aliviah Ross accounted for all six Newton goals. Ross scored the first, third, fourth, and fifth, with Coady providing three assists. Coady netted Newton’s second and sixth goal, with Ross assisting on the last one. They now share the team lead in goals this season at 11 each.
The Newton girls soccer team is now 6-4-1, and will host Dallas Center-Grimes Tuesday night.
Three Newton Cardinal Tennis Players Place at Knoxville Invitational
The Newton girls tennis team finished 4th with three players placing in the seven team Knoxville Girls Invitational Friday. Alexis Dirksen took second in the singles competition. She had a first round bye and advanced to the Championship match with a two set win and then a come from behind three set victory. In the Championship, Dirksen lost in two sets to Knoxville’s Janie Maasdam.
The doubles team of Paige Benson and Morgan Frehse finished third. They also received a first round bye and won their second round match in two sets. In the third round, Benson and Frehse suffered a two set loss to the eventual doubles champions. The two Cardinals then came back and won the third place set 6-3.
Emmerson Gross also played singles matches for Newton. She lost her first round match in two sets and was given a bye in the first round of the consolation bracket. She then lost the second round consolation set 6-3.
The next matches for the Newton girls tennis team will be Tuesday at Pella Christian.
