The Simpson Storm softball team could not find a win against the Kohawks of Coe Saturday at home with a chance to clinch an American Rivers Conference regular season championship, falling 8-5 in 10 innings and 4-3 as heard live on 94.3 KNIA.
The bats would not come alive for the Storm throughout the day, and fell behind after the Kohawks scored a pair of runs in the fifth, with Simpson striking back on a Lexi Ehlers sacrifice fly, and that score would hold until the seventh when down to their final chance Mackenzie James hit an RBI double to tie the score and force extras. Simpson had chances to score and walk off the game in the eighth and ninth, then gave way in the tenth as the Kohawks put it on and plated six runs to lead 8-2. The Storm offense finally woke up and plated three runs, and had the tying run at home plate but were unable to continue the rally. The Storm stranded 13 runners on base in the loss. Emma Lafave picked up the tough luck loss, going nine innings giving up three earned runs and striking out nine.
Game two saw the Storm go ahead 2-0 into the third inning with RBI hits from James and Ehlers, but the Kohawks answered with a four-run fourth to lead 4-2. James drove in another run in the fifth, and the Storm loaded the bases with nobody out in the sixth but were unable to score a run and fell 4-3. Kylee Tucker had the loss in the circle.
James went 4-7 at the plate, Megan Heidelbauer went 4-9, and Caelynn Obleton went 4-7 on the day. Simpson falls to 30-6 overall and 11-5 in conference, and will need help to win an American Rivers Conference championship.
