The Norwalk baseball team completed a three-game season sweep of Newton on Friday night, erasing an early 3-0 deficit to beat the Cardinals 6-3 at HA Lynn Baseball Field. The game was streamed live on kniakrls.com (KNIA3).

Newton struck early for three first-inning runs off Warrior pitcher Garrett Geurink. Cade Bauer and Creighton Andrew opened the rally with a single and a double, Dakota Winkelman drew a bases-loaded walk and Derek Wermager was hit-by-pitch before an out was recorded. Mason Mendez added an RBI single to make it 3-0 Cardinals.

Norwalk answered quickly with two runs in the top of the second and three more in the third to go ahead 5-3. Ryan Jones got the Warriors going with an opposite field double and Kingston Lamb followed with a run-scoring triple. Kale Wadle’s sacrifice fly made it 3-2. One inning later, Jones crushed another double to the left field fence, clearing the bases for three RBI. Konner Holtorf tripled in the fifth and scored on a single by Jones to make it 6-3.

Jones and Holtorf both went 3-for-4 from the middle of the Warrior lineup, including three extra-base hits. Jones tallied four RBI and five of Norwalk’s nine hits went for extra bases. Geurink settled down nicely after the first, retiring 10 straight batters at one point. He pitched six innings for his second win of the season. Wadle pitched a scoreless seventh for the save in his first varsity appearance of the year.

Newton added only one hit after the first – a fifth-inning double by Gabe Otto. Cade Bauer took the loss, allowing six hits and five runs in 3 ⅓ innings. Andrew pitched the final 3 ⅔ in relief, notching five strikeouts.

Norwalk improved to 8-8 overall and 7-4 in the Little Hawkeye Conference. The Warriors host Bondurant-Farrar for a doubleheader on Monday. Newton is now 3-12 overall and 1-9 in the LHC. The Cardinals travel to Pella Christian for a Monday doubleheader.
