Pella High head boys’ basketball coach, Mark Core, has set goals for his team to achieve not over the course of the season, but in each individual game. He believes the bar he sets for each of his varsity athletes will help them become a more balanced team and get his younger kids that he will have on the squad this season up to “varsity speed” quicker than usual.
“We’re going to try to be gritty, hard-nosed, tough, blue-collar and selfless,” Core said. “We’re going to try to communicate very well and try to have a champion’s mindset. We’re going to be leaders in school and in the classroom. Those come together and allow us to have success in terms of a win-loss record or a run in the tournaments.”
You can stop by the high school this Tuesday to see the team in action for the first time in an intra-squad scrimmage that’s taking place at 7:30 p.m. They have dubbed it “Parents’ Night,” though it is open to the public to come and see. The first varsity game of the season for Core and his guys will be this Friday at home against A-D-M, a game that will be broadcast on 92.1 FM KRLS, starting at 5:45 p.m.
