A standoff between an armed man and the Pella Police Department ended with one man dead from a self inflicted gunshot wound yesterday morning. At 8:29am the PPD received reports of shots fired in Brook Circle. Subsequent reports from eye witnesses indicated that an assailant, William Shaw, age 49 of Fremont, Iowa, was firing a handgun at a fleeing man as they ran through the neighborhood. The man being chased was not shot, but did receive minor injuries during the incident. Shaw then fled the scene before being stopped near the Water Treatment Plant. Shaw threatened himself with a gun during a 20 minute long standoff with police before shooting himself.  Shaw was alive when transported to Pella Regional Health Center, but later died from his injuries. The Department of Criminal Investigation is currently investigating the cause of this incident. Pella Police Chief Robert Bokinsky says he is thankful for the support from other law enforcement agencies and the quick action taken by the residents who reported the shooting in Brook Circle.  Hear Chief Bokinsky’s full comments on today’s Let’s Talk Pella.
