The State Wrestling Tournament got underway yesterday and both Pella wrestlers survived day one of action in Class 3A.
Brent Smith won his opening round match at 140 pounds 6-0 over Tanner Regenweather of Linn Mar to advance to tonight’s quarterfinals where he will face the defending state champion Jake Ballweg of Waverly Shell Rock. Smith is now 33-4 on the season. A.J. Arendell lost his opening round match at 189 pounds by pin to Jarrod Bartel of Mason City but came back to win his consolation match with a quick 1:35 pin over Cameron Jewett of Sioux City East. Arendell has a very tough task tonight as he will face either the defending state champion or a two time champion in his second round consolation match. Arendell improved to 31-5 on the season. Twin Cedars Daniel Williams who wrestles for Oskaloosa at 119 pounds was eliminated from the tournament last night as he went 0-2 losing both matches by decision.
Both of PCM’s wrestlers were eliminated from competition yesterday as Jake Tool and Dalton Kingery each went 0-2 in the opening round of Class 2A.
