Gregory Eugene Simmons, formerly of Knoxville, an inmate assigned to the Clarinda Correctional Facility, died Wednesday.

Emergency medical assistance was called to Simmons’ cell due to excessive vomiting. Upon entering the cell medical staff determined that Simmons was not breathing and there was no pulse. Simmons was pronounced deceased at 12:00 P.M. An autopsy has been ordered to determine the cause of death. Simmons was arrested for attacking his wife with a knife, committing an unlawful sex act and kidnapping in 2010. Simmons was 51 years old and serving a 25 year sentence from Marion County. This sentence began on December 13, 2010.
