Public Health Nurse Judi Van Hulzen tells KNIA/KRLS News the impact of the ZIKA Virus is limited in Iowa, but as summer heats up we should be aware of other mosquito-borne illnesses like West Nile.
There have been 7 confirmed cases of ZIKA in Iowa, all of them in people who had recently traveled to South America, but Marion County has at least a few cases of West Nile Virus every summer. Van Hulzen suggests covering up and using mosquito repellents to reduce risk. Repellents should not be used on infants. Limiting standing water is the best way to deter mosquitoes from breeding.
