The mother of a 18-month old child who died because of a nap in a car seat last summer is remembering the loss by hoping others won’t repeat the same costly mistake made by a daycare provider.
Lisa Smith’s daughter Amelia, or Mia, died on June 10th, 2015, just a few days after she was found unresponsive in a car seat while under the care of Valerie Wackerly, who pled guilty to involuntary manslaughter. She received probation and was ordered to pay restitution in April.
One year later, Mia’s death draws numerous tears and emotions from those who knew and loved her. Lisa hopes her daughter’s tragic passing can now be a cautionary tale for other families and caretakers.
“This can happen anywhere to anyone,” she says. “Mia deserves to be remembered for the way she lived, not the way she died. But if the way she died can help others, then that’s why we share, that’s why we tell others.”
Lisa is thankful for the way many different people helped her during the last moments of Mia’s life and how her family has been treated ever since.
