County Auditor Jake Grandia says voter turnout is rarely high in primary elections, but this year saw an even smaller percentage of people get to the polls.
Grandia says past years have seen an average of 10% of the electorate casting primary ballots, but the recent primary, held Tuesday, saw just 5%. The sole contested local race was between Democrats Martin Duffy of Knoxville and Lois DeWaard of Pleasantville vying for the chance to unseat incumbent Republican Greg Heartsill in the District 28 seat in the State House. Duffy won by taking in 364 votes. DeWaard pulled in 219.
