Wartburg scored a touchdown less than two minutes in to Saturday’s game against Central, but the Dutch ripped off six straight touchdowns and beat the Knights 51-37.
After Wartburg fired the opening salvo, Central bounced back with touchdown passes from Riley Gray to Sam Markham, Kyle Gritsch, Markham again and Zach Martinelli. Nathan Fitzgerald then busted a 54-yard touchdown run, and Gray struck again with a screen TD to Fitzgerald.
Gray’s five touchdown passes tied a 44 year old Central record. He was 29-of-43 for 327 and also added 18 carries for 82 yards. Fitzgerald rumbled for 137 yards on 21 carries, and Sam Markham caught 12 passes for 202 yards and the two scores.
The two teams combined for 1,175 yards of offensive, 885 of which came through the air.
Central improves to 6-2 overall and 4-2 in the Iowa Conference. They’ll have their bye week this Saturday before hosting Simpson on November fifth.
