In a match that looked to be even coming in, the Knoxville Wrestling Squad beat country rival Pella 41-30 last night. Both teams would trade wins by fall or decision for the first part of the match. Pella seemed to gain the momentum with a Sam Fredrickson pin at 138 pounds to put the Dutch up 24-18. However, Knoxville would respond with a Joe Hollinrake overtime win over Ethan Speltz 145 followed by pin falls by Panther wrestlers Riley Spaur and Michael Ullestad at 152 and 160 pounds to put the Panthers up 33-24. After Pella received a forfeit to close the gap to 33-30, Knoxville’s Coby Meyer slammed the door shut on Pella with a major decision to put Knoxville up by seven with one match remaining. Knoxville Coach Doug Hatch told KNIA/KRLS Sports the upper weights were key and hopes that will help his team this season. Pella Coach Joe Burch told KNIA/KRLS Sports the pin falls and major decisions by Knoxville were too much to overcome. Twin Cedars was also at the meet, both Knoxville and Pella claimed easy team wins over the Sabers. The Panthers are 3-0 in dual meets and Pella is 3-2. Knoxville will travel to the Central Decatur Invitational tonight while Pella will travel to the Saydel Meet on Saturday.
