Nobody was injured when the driver of a silver van accidentally backed all the way onto a flower bed on the downtown Pella square.
At 2:40 p.m. Thursday afternoon, an elderly woman mistook her brake pedal for the gas pedal when pulling out of a parking spot next to City Hall. Police say she then panicked when the van kept moving and accelerated backwards onto Broadway Street. She then slammed into an unoccupied, parked sedan and kept going through Central Park, hit a tree and two benches, and eventually came to a stop on a flower bed next to the Sundial.
Pella Ambulance responded to check on the driver, and she suffered no injuries. The Pella Police Department handled the investigation, and City of Pella Parks staff cleaned up the benches and tree hit by the van. The silver sedan involved suffered extensive damage to the rear end.
