A stagnant first 30 minutes of offense by both schools led to an explosion of points on the scoreboard in Indianola on Saturday. Fortunately for Simpson, those points were mostly on their side as they breezed by Illinois College, 45 – 13, in a game heard live on AM 1320 and FM 95.3 KNIA. Simpson’s best offense was their defense in the first half; the Storm secondary picked off a Drew Chance pass and took it back to the one yard line, where Simpson punched it in for their only points of the half.
The third quarter was the major turnaround; after the Blueboys recovered an onside kick to begin the second half, Simpson’s defense sacked the quarterback, forced a fumble, pounced on it, then drove down the field to score the first six of their 38 unanswered points. The Storm outgained Illinois, 271 – 110 in the final 30 minutes, and quarterback Sam Sasso was 17-for-24 passing for 171 yards and four touchdowns.
Simpson gets back to .500 with a 1 – 1 overall record, and they’ll begin conference play back at Bill Buxton Stadium for a third straight game when Wartburg comes to town next Saturday.
