Marion County emergency call numbers are up across the board according to the Sheriff’s Office, Knoxville Police Department and Knoxville Fire and Rescue.
Knoxville Fire Chief Jim Mitchell says his department responded to 1,957 calls in 2016 and adds that in the past three years calls have increased at a rate of about 200 per year.
Calls for police service in Knoxville increased by 11% from last year to 7422, 13% above average according to Chief Dan Losada. Officers made a total of 433 arrests, 126 more than 2015 and a 10-year high for the city.
Marion County Sheriff Jason Sandholdt says the Law Enforcement Center fielded 30,345 calls for service. Sandholdt specifically pointed to increased drug activity. Meth and opioid abuse has become more common in the county in the past few years. He says part of the reason for the increase in arrests is that his office has been putting more resources into prosecuting drug offenses in the county.
