The Pella Police Department responded to their highest number of calls for service in five years in 2016.

According to data provided by the PD, officers responded to 8920 total last year. Pella Police Chief Robert Bokinsky says that number has been trending upward since he came to the department.

Bokinsky says arrests were down in 2016, and have been trending downward overall during the past five years, which he says is due in part to improved police investigation techniques at the department.

The other number that jumped out to Bokinsky was 676 citations issued for traffic violations, which has been cut in half over the past five years. But he adds during that same time frame, the number of warnings jumped significantly, because he says he wanted the department to better educate drivers about their behaviors, instead of attempt to generate revenue for the department.
