Firefighters and other first responders worked in tandem to rescue a man trapped inside Lambirth’s Truck and Parts in Attica as it burned Tuesday night.

Knoxville Township Rural Fire Chief Kenny Thompson tells KNIA/KRLS News a group was trying to get Dale Osborn down from the second floor when he arrived. As they rushed to line up a ladder Osborn fell approximately 15 feet and Rich Lambirth broke his fall. Osborn has 2nd and 3rd degree burns on his legs, but is in stable condition at the University of Iowa Hospital Burn Unit according to his family. Lambirth was not seriously hurt. Thompson says extinguishing the fire was the work of seven fire departments all coordinating their efforts and avoiding hazards at the scene. Thompson says the fire was split into two zones, one he coordinated and one coordinated by Knoxville City Fire Chief Jim Mitchell. Initially firefighters were cautious about approaching as several explosions rocked the structure, but deployed hoses quickly after the risks lessened. Live power lines on the ground also posed a problem until energy company workers were able to shut them down. Indiana Township Fire Department, Knoxville Township Fire Department, Knoxville Fire and Rescue, Columbia Fire Department, Bussey Fire and Rescue, Melcher-Dallas Fire Department, Pella Fire Department, Pella Rural Fire, and the Marion County Sheriff’s Office all responded to the scene. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
