A Galena, Illinois man died during a nearly day-long standoff with police in Pella.
Police say Jonathan W. Martin, 62, apparently shot himself while barricaded in an apartment in The Reserves at Mill Farm on West 16th Street. Pella Police Chief Robert Bokinsky tells KNIA/KRLS News officers initially went to do a welfare check on Martin Tuesday evening, but he refused to communicate. He says police believed Martin to be a danger to himself and possibly others.
Martin had a warrant for a felony related to property crime in Illinois. A woman inside the residence throughout the incident eventually communicated with officers, and left the apartment late Wednesday morning. She was there at her own free will, according to police.
Bokinsky says both Martin and the woman were in the community for at least a week. Late Wednesday afternoon, after implementing tear gas, an Iowa State Patrol tactical team entered the building and found Martin dead of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound from a shotgun he was believed to be armed with during the standoff.
The Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation and Pella Police Department are conducting an ongoing investigation. Pella Fire, Pella Ambulance, and the Iowa State Patrol also responded.
