The Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR) and Iowa State Trapshooting Association (ISTA) hosted the state Scholastic Clay Target Program state trapshooting championship event at the ISTA home grounds just north of Cedar Falls over the weekend.
Dozens of local high school students from the Pella, Knoxville, Pella Christian, Twin Cedars and PCM teams from 20 area communities took part in the event.
Pella Christian finished 6th in the intermediate entry division, and Mason Walters finished in 6th place in the intermediate boys advanced division for Pella Christian. Knoxville was 17th out of 52 teams in the intermediate entry division as well. Erica Bracken of Pella, Jasmine Holbrook of Knoxville, and Emily Sytsma of Pella Christian finished in the top 21 of the girls advanced ranks.
Emily Uitermarkt of Pella Christian and Paige Wood with PCM placed 5th and 6th in the Girls Junior Varsity event, with Josie Brooks and Mackenzie Blackford of the Knoxville Shooting Club placing 20th and 21st.
Alec Vande Noord of Pella placed 3rd individually in doubles trap and 4th individually in handicap trap in the Intermediate Advanced division.
Area clay target teams will also compete at the State Sporting Clays Championship at Black Oak Clay in Pella on Saturday and at the State Skeet Championship in Waukee June 22-24.
