It has the look and feel of a classic Broadway musical, but it’s only been around for a few years…and it’s coming to Knoxville next month.
The Knoxville Area Community Theater will be staging its performance of “Nice Work if You Can Get It” from Thursday, November 1st through Sunday, November 4th.
This show entirely features songs by George Gershwin, and seems like it could have debuted in the 1950’s or sooner — but it actually first premiered on Broadway in 2012, featuring Matthew Broderick in the lead role.
Carol Adkins from the Knoxville Area Community Theater tells KNIA/KRLS News the story is set in 1927, with a band of bootleggers looking for a place to hide their stash of illegal gin.
“They find a place they think is gonna be perfect; they move their 400 cases to the basement of this beach house…and it turns out the people that own it, are coming there for a wedding. And so the bootleggers have to pose as servants, and some of the wedding guests are Prohibitionists.”
Adkins says the troupe draws performers of all ages from around the area, and they’ve worked hard to make the show fit the 1920’s motif as much as possible.
Performances are at the Knoxville Performing Arts Center for four nights, Thursday, November 1st through Saturday, November 3rd at 7:00 p.m. with a matinee on Sunday, November 4th at 2:00 p.m.
