The dance squads which keep the crowd entertained at high school and college basketball games over the winter, get their turn at competition this week as they take part in the state’s dance contest.

Teams from all over Iowa will converge on the Wells Fargo Arena and Hy-Vee Hall in Des Moines on Thursday and Friday, for the Iowa State Dance and Drill Team Association contest. High school and college teams will take the stage in several divisions and perform in a variety of musical styles.

Among the area schools represented are Knoxville, Pella, Pella Christian, Indianola, Pleasantville, PCM, Melcher-Dallas, Twin Cedars, Central College and Simpson College.

Many of the participants danced in the state solo performance finals in Newton earlier this month, and will now be alongside classmates as they shoot for team titles.

The award ceremonies for the college participants will be at 6:15 p.m. Friday, and for the high school contestants at about 8:00 p.m. Friday, both at the Wells Fargo Arena.
