American Legion Post 89 in Pella recognized 5th graders in Pella for participating in the annual Flag Essay Contest.

Three winners were chosen: 3rd place – Kelsey Tauke, 2nd place – J.J. Spratt, and 1st place – Jocelyn Lunsford, all of Jefferson Intermediate School.

American Legion Post 89 Commander Paul Beyer, and members Rob Bandstra, Alan Naaktgeboren, and Calvin Van Ee presented participation certificates to 187 students who wrote flag essays at Jefferson and Pella Christian Grade School. The students were tasked in November to write about the U.S. flag and its importance to them and those around them, which were then judged by members of the Legion and educators at both schools.

The top three winning essays will be read by Tauke, Spratt, and Lunsford at the American Legion’s March 26th meeting at 7:30 p.m. in the Pella Memorial Building. Tune in to Let’s Talk Pella Friday to hear reaction from the Flag Essay Contest Winners.
