The Iowa State Patrol is advising residents to avoid driving in today’s snow storm if possible, but for those who are planning to brave the roads, they need to be prepared.
Trooper Alex Dinkla with the Iowa State Patrol tells KNIA/KRLS News that anyone planning to travel needs to have essential items in case of emergency.
“We’ve already had a few snow storms this year, but this one is going to be a little bit different, because this one is going to have extreme winds and cold,” he says. “Make sure that if you really have to drive that you are packing that car kit.”
Dinkla says to have bottled water, non-perishable snacks, a blanket, and not to forget a cell phone with a car charger.
“If you might be in an accident, you’ll know to call 911,” he says.
Dinkla advises in an emergency to call that number instead, especially in an area that isn’t well-known or familiar.
“If you’re curious about road conditions, or need any help — there’s a couple ways you can check that, and that’s by calling *55. Calling *55 will reach our main state patrol dispatch center, and they can get you connected to wherever you may need to be connected to.”
Widespread snowfall of 4-8″ is expected in south central Iowa through early Saturday morning. Stay tuned to KNIA/KRLS for updates from the winter storm warning in effect during that time frame.
