The Simpson Storm women’s basketball team survived a Coe shot at the buzzer to force overtime in a 78-73 extra time victory, while the men couldn’t get enough clutch baskets to fall in an 84-78 defeat.
The Storm women were up early against the Kohawks, before they came roaring back to take a 32-30 lead at halftime. The teams traded the lead in the third and fourth quarter, before Simpson found themselves down four with less than a minute to go. A steal by Rachel Freland sandwiched by back-to-back three point shots from Jenna Taylor and Janey Botkins put the Storm up two, before Coe made a shot at the buzzer to force the extra period. Simpson outscored Coe 8-3 in extra time to pick up the win, while junior point guard Claire Johnson filled up the stat sheet with 22 points, 6 rebounds, 6 assists, 7 steals, and only 1 turnover.
The Storm men also got up early on Coe 20-10, before huge runs from the Kohawks led to a 39-39 tie at the half. 63% shooting the second half led to Coe getting too many easy buckets and picked up the six point win. Conor Riordan scored 34 in the losing effort. The Storm women improve to 12-3 overall and 6-2 in conference play, while the Storm men are now 9-7 and 3-5. Both squads will travel to Buena Vista on Wednesday.
