In spite of record or near-record cold temperatures, no serious problems related to the weather emerged in Knoxville during the day on Wednesday.
Police Chief Dan Losada says his department only dealt with a couple of stalled vehicles; otherwise, no serious problems were reported as a result of the extreme cold temperatures.
A number of private businesses joined schools in closing down for the day, in anticipation of temperatures falling beyond minus-20 degrees. The Knoxville School District shut down its schools for the second day in a row.
Kim Pettyjohn with Marion County Emergency Management says no problems have been reported around the county, in terms of power outages or other severe effects from the weather.
Marion County provided the locations of warming centers for those in need of relief during the day from the extreme cold, and Pettyjohn says that there has been no reported use of those facilities at this time.
Knoxville Hospital and Clinics has had no reported incidents of frostbite, hypothermia or anything else cold-related. Katrina Nelson from the hospital says staff is prepared with warm blankets, warming devices and warmed IV fluids just in case.
