Pella and Pella Christian girls track athletes hit the oval in Ames as the indoor season continues. Dozens of teams from Iowa competed from Class 1A to 4A in the Iowa State University invitational, as preparations continue for outdoor competition.
The defending 3A champion Lady Dutch sent a large group to the home of the Cyclones, with Pella’s relays finishing among the best. The 4×100 meter team of Metsje Miller, Andrea VanHuekelom, Emily McMartin, and Roselande Vanderhoff finishing 4th overall (52.20 seconds), the girls sprint medley of Miller, Vanderhoff, Emily Holterhaus, and Elsie Thoreson placing 5th (1:58.53), and the 4×800 relay team of Tirzah Wittenberg, Abby Cutler, Chelsea Jorgensen, and Caroline McMartin placing 9th (10:36.44). Vanderhoff also clocked in at the the 5th fastest 60 meter dash time of 8.26, followed by a 19th place result for Emily McMartin (8.53). Holterhaus also placed 20th in the 60 meter hurdles (10.23).
Pella Christian’s girls opened their competitive season, with a 4th place overall finish in the shotput by 2018 state qualifier Allison Van Gorp (36-10.00), as well as an 11th place finish for the 4×100 relay of Erica Nikkel, Chloe Morgan, Mary Kate Bandstra, and Avey Amelse, with a time of 53.55. Nikkel also placed 11th in the 60 meter dash with a time of 8.43.
