The first step to amend the Iowa Constitution to restore voting rights to felons in Iowa who have served their prison term has been passed by the Iowa Legislature. State Representative Scott Ourth tells KNIA News those who have served their time should be able to participate in society and have a voice.
“I’m for restorative justice. I believe there is such a thing as restitution. In my Christian life, I believe in the concept of grace and forgivness, and that is one of the first things that Jesus taught. That grace and forgiveness was a central pillar of how he treated people, and I believe he was right about that.”
In order for the Iowa Constitution to be amended, the measure would have to pass both houses in the 89th legislative assembly in 2021, and then be put up for a statewide vote.
