A Pella man is accused of stealing from a family member’s storage shed and violating his status on the sex offender registry was sentenced this week. Benjamin Curtis, 38, pled guilty to 3rd degree burglary, 2nd degree theft, 4th degree theft, and criminal mischief, as well as possession of methamphetamine and sex offender registry violation. Curtis was sentenced to a total of 17 years in prison for the charges. According to court records, the Pella Police Department, learned of storage sheds in the community that were broken in to through a dividing wall. Officers learned Curtis was related to the owner, and after a search warrant was issued for the residence, found over $1000 in valuables stolen from the storage units. Additionally, according to investigators, he admitted to burglarizing the facility on an audio recording to a witness. Curtis is living in the 700 Block of 4th Street in Pella and was recently released from prison after serving time relating to a 2013 guilty plea to 3rd degree sexual abuse and domestic assault. Curtis was sentenced to 11 years, but was released in 2018 and is a registered sex offender.
