The Indianola Public Library Summer Reading Program has begun, setting reading goals and providing entertainment for kids during the summer. Janis Comer with the library tells KNIA News it is important for kids to continue reading when they are not in school.

“It’s essential, especially when they are not in school. There is such a thing as a summer slide. If kids don’t read, they don’t advance in their reading and if they just take the summer off and don’t think, it just becomes harder and harder when they do get back in school. It’s tough for the teachers, it’s tough for the kids, it’s a big adjustment. If they keep reading, and keep thinking, and keep doing, then it really battles that summer slide and it’s our job to help.”

Prizes are available for participants who accomplish reading goals during the program. The Summer Reading Program is still available to join for parents and kids who have not done so yet.
