According to the Knoxville Chamber of Commerce, local businesses have been contacted recently by a person saying they are from MidAmerican Energy, threatening to turn off power to the business if they do not make an immediate phone payment. According to MidAmerican Energy this is a scam and they are working to contact local businesses who might have been affected. MidAmerican Energy would like its customers to know they do not call demanding immediate payment by phone. According to the Chamber, the calls may appear legitimate because callers manipulate caller ID’s to display the MidAmerican Energy name along with a phone number. MidAmerican Energy says customers who receive a suspicious call should hang up and notify MidAmerican Energy at the number on your monthly utility bill. If you feel threatened by the call, report it to local law enforcement. Do not call the number that appears on your caller-ID display, even if you think it might be legitimate.
