Today is National PTSD Awareness Day. National PTSD Day is a day set aside to encourage open talk about PTSD, its causes, symptoms, and getting help for the condition. Psychologist Kathryn Sharp with the Knoxville VA Community Based Outpatient Clinic tells KNIA/KRLS News people suffering from PTSD can slowly be restricted by the disorder. Sharp says the restricting can start in small ways in which the person suffering avoids small social interactions and can slowly continue to avoid interactions until they are unable to potentially have meaningful relationships. PTSD or Post Traumatic Stress Disorder affects close to 8 million people in the United States. About 10 percent of women will develop PTSD sometime in their lives compared with about 4 percent for men, according to the U.S. Department of Veteran Affairs. About 20 percent of veterans returning from combat will also be diagnosed with PTSD.
