Marion County is improving its emergency preparedness by installing storm shelters at various county locations. Emergency Management Coordinator Jeff Anderson tells KNIA/KRLS News following the tornado that hit Vermeer on July 19th of last year the county took a look at how prepared the county was regarding storm shelters. He says the county supervisors felt like the county employees needed to be better protected and that part of recovery after any major event is to have the county employees be able to step back in and provide the services they do on a daily basis. Anderson says three shelters are being installed at the Marion County Public Health location, one at the County Office Complex on East Main Street in Knoxville and six others at various county engineer locations. Each shelter can hold between 13 to 18 people during a storm. Total cost of the project is roughly $51,000.
