Three days of oppressive heat in the region will come to an end Sunday. An excessive heat warning remains in place for all of south central Iowa until this evening. Daytime highs will top out in the mid-90s, with heat index values as hot as 110 degrees possible during peak heating hours. Relief is in sight, however, as a cold front is expected to sweep through the state through tonight, with moderate to heavy rain possible during the transition from hot to mild. Daytime highs will drop to much more comfortable levels by Sunday, peaking in the low to mid 80s until late next week, with dry conditions in place starting Monday, according to the National Weather Service.
