It wasn’t necessarily pretty, but the fifth-ranked Pella High football team got the job done in a 14-0 nothing win over number seven Dallas Center-Grimes last night in a game heard live on the KRLS2 stream at www.kniaklrs.com.

Both Little Dutch touchdowns came in the second quarter, as Ryan Mace hit Logan Shetterly for a 13-yard score, and Aaron Downs wrecked his way in from one-yard out.

After that, the Pella defense did the rest.  DCG managed just 176 yards of offense and never really threatened to score.

Pella Coach Jay McKinstrey, who won his 200th career game, says that it was nice to see his young club put it together for 48 minutes.

“I don’t think anyone can understand, really, because they think we’ll just roll out there and be okay.  But we have a lot of young kids and inexperienced kids who haven’t played a lot of varsity football when the game is on the line.  To see the way the fought tonight, and they stayed in the fight and finished it, that was really nice to see because you never know how they’re going to deal with it.”

Downs carried 23 times for 113 yards, while Mace was 6-of-12 passing for 40 yards and Shetterly grabbed four balls for 30 yards.

Up next is a trip to Mount Pleasant next Friday night.
