The Indianola City Council approved the hiring of seasonal workers to help with snow plowing operations this winter at their most recent meeting Tuesday. City Manager Ryan Waller tells KNIA News this was brought on by the city policy implemented last year that requires mandatory breaks for city crews.

“One of the things we implemented from a safety standpoint was mandatory rest periods for drivers. Because of that, certain departments that have helped us in the past have indicated that they can’t help us. So what we had to do was look at ways to accomplish the tasks of removing snow during snowstorms, and we decided on adding two additional on-call employees. From a budgetary standpoint, we believe that we will find savings because we won’t be paying those employees who used to help out an overtime rate, this will just be an hourly rate.”
