Tenth-ranked Bethel shut down the Simpson football team with a suffocating defense to start their season Saturday on the road, as the Storm fell 42-10. Both teams traded blows and got off to slow starts to begin the game, but Bethel struck first and took a 7-0 at the end of the first quarter. The Storm countered with a drive deep into Royals territory, but had to settle for a field goal and Bethel scored another pair of touchdowns to go into halftime up 21-3. The first possession of the second half led to another score for Bethel on an 8-minute drive, as the Storm held the ball for just over 3 minutes the entire third quarter and trailed 35-3 going into the 4th. Running back Joe Meyer eventually pushed across the end zone line for the Storm’s first touchdown of the season, but it was too little too late. Wide Receiver Sam Bartlett was one of the bright spots for the Storm, garnering 119 yards on 6 receptions. The Storm fall to 0-1 on the season, and will host the University of Chicago next Saturday for their home opener.
