Warning issued Tuesday 10/1/19 by National Weather Service
Several severe thunderstorm and tornado warnings were issued throughout south central Iowa Tuesday evening. The KNIA/KRLS Severe Weather Action Team was on the air from approximately 5 to 6 p.m. for two severe thunderstorm and one tornado warning for portions of northwest and northern Warren Counties, with five staff members contributing to live coverage and updates from Weatherology meteorologists. While the severe weather threat lessened throughout the evening, heavy rainfall impacted most of the region later in the evening. The closest storm reports from the National Weather Service included a funnel cloud approximately 8 miles west of Martensdale and several instances of large hail in the Des Moines metro. Funnel clouds were also spotted near Prairie City and Reasnor in Jasper County. After a few additional chances for showers Wednesday, cooler, drier air will settle into the region through Friday evening, with additional rain showers possible this weekend. KNIA/KRLS is on the air for any severe thunderstorm or tornado warning for any portion of Marion and Warren Counties, with backup generators ensuring the coverage stays on if the power goes out.
