The Pella Little Dutch continued their quest for a district crown with a Week 6 road trip to South Tama Friday evening, as heard live on KRLS2. After a Warren Page interception on the first drive of the game, Nolan Clayberg opened the scoring with a four-yard touchdown carry. South Tama responded on the following drive with a touchdown of their own to make it 7-6. Ryan Mace used his legs on a quarterback keeper from one yard out to go up 14-6 on the ensuing drive.
Mace connected with Logan Shetterly for a 20-yard score to open the second quarter. After three straight punts, Clayberg powered through the line for a one-yard touchdown run to increase the lead to 28-6, and that would be the halftime score.
Mace found Grant Nelson in the end zone on the second play from scrimmage of the third quarter to go up 35-6. The Dutch kept pouring it on throughout the second half, and pulled away for a 63-12 win. Pella coach Jay McKinstrey says that South Tama gave it all they had in the first half, but was happy with how his team responded in the second half.
Pella committed some key penalties in the first half, but benefitted from having great starting field position on many of their drives.
Ryan Mace finished 11/18 through the air with three touchdown passes as well as one on the ground. Logan Shetterly was his favorite target on the evening, with seven catches for 158 yards and two touchdowns. Nolan Clayberg finished with seven carries for 35 yards and two touchdowns to lead a very balanced rushing attack. Shetterly led defensively with six tackles.
Pella improves to 4-2 overall and 2-0 in Class 3A District 7. Up next is Senior Night in Week 7 as the Dutch welcome in Oskaloosa to town.
